Question:

Did God experience such profound sorrow for Jesus’ suffering in Matthew 24:47 that His attention shifted away, leading Jesus to cry out and ask why He had forsaken him?

Answer:

Matthew 27:46 revealed one of the seven sayings of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The statement “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” doesn’t imply that God at a point couldn’t bear the suffering of His son. But the reason is that God couldn’t bear to see sin, your sin, my sin, our sin. It is for this reason Jesus on the cross endured judgment and penalty for the atonement of our sins. We deserve to be forsaken by God; we deserve to be separated from Him; we deserve to perish; but that wasn’t the plan of God concerning us. These words should influence our decisions, which is, that our place of shame, pain, mockery, humiliation, and condemnation was once taken by Jesus on the grounds of reconciling us to God. Interestingly, I can imagine how difficult it will be for one to lay down his life for another. Let alone, failing to be appreciated for such sacrifice. What picture am I painting? The decision to die for another to live is a very difficult one to make. Yet a man once made such a decision for our sake. The least we can do is to appreciate this ultimate sacrifice by Jesus Christ. May we receive His grace to fulfill the purpose of our calling.

IDENTITY OF THE CHOSEN GENERATION

God is unchanging, He is reliable, and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. If you find your identity in Him, you will never ultimately be let down because He has proven time and time again to be trustworthy. The question remains like this; what is my identity in God as a believer, as a follower of Christ, as a son or daughter of God, or as a chosen generation? To be able to understand your identity as a follower of Christ, you need to understand how He sees you. It’s easy to build your identity on what you accomplish, but this is not a stable foundation.

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. Hebrews 11:24-26, NIV. By implication, Moses came of age only to realize that his identity had been mistaken for what it ought to be. Quickly, he made the decision to forego all the luxuries and other earthly pleasures in Egypt in order to share in the suffering, torture, and pain of the Israelites.

How does it feel to trade the comforts and excitements of life for slavery and suffering? Very difficult decision to make right? Yet Moses made the decision to choose eternal glory over temporal inheritance on earth. One thing is certain, which is; decisions we make as people of God are influenced by our identity in Christ. This is why your identity as a chosen generation cannot be compromised. As you find your identity in Christ, you will grow to look more like Him and less like the world. You will grow in intimacy with Him and with other believers as well. Receive grace to be identified in God.

HONOURED IN THE STORM

Realistically, it looks impossible to praise God when you are in severe pain and the only idea left on your mind is FREEDOM. Horatio Spafford composed the hymn “It is well with my soul” in the midst of the tragedy that struck him after losing his only four surviving daughters in the Atlantic ocean. This was after his son of four years died of scarlet fever. Giving praises to God in the midst of the storm is a reflection of your confidence and conviction in God and it unleashes the power of God!

In Acts 16:25-34, Paul and Silas, after being denied of freedom and joy chose to pray and honour the Lord at midnight. This act exonerated them from all accusations by the Philippians and in effect, brought salvation to the household of the Philippian jailer.

David said in Psalm 34:1 that “I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace”. That notwithstanding the healthy or unhealthy situation encountered, David expresses his commitment to honour God at all times. Your challenge may be as big as the ocean, yet, not greater than the creator of the ocean. So, ascribe ble

ssing, give honour, praise, and glory to him, both as the God of nature and providence at all times in the day.

Choose this day to praise God no matter the condition you have found yourself in. There is no better time to honour God than in the midst of the storm.

HIS PLACE OF GLORY REMAINS

Higher, Higher, Higher, when my praises go high, His glory comes down.

No one deserves to share in the glory of God, because He is miles ahead of all. Herod met his untimely and shameful death after attempting to change this rule.

“And the people kept shouting, the voice of a god and not a man!” Then immediately, an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died (Acts 12:22-23).

No deity, person, or object stands in the position of taking God’s glory.

Isaiah 42:8 reads “I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

Beloved, receive grace to glorify God at all times and stay blessed
